Spanish Port Dispute

We have been advised the advertised strikes on 17th, 20th, 22nd and 24th March 2017 in the Port of Bilbao have been suspended.

Whilst strikes have been postponed, congestion and slow productivity still remain in the port and expect to remain so during this period of industrial uncertainty.

Discussions still continue with all parties and the situation remains fluid.

Your local Macandrews contact will continue to keep you up to date as situation evolves.

02nd March 2017 12:00 Update

We regret to inform that labour disputes in Spanish ports have escalated in recent weeks as a consequence of the Government plans to reform the Spanish Ports Act in accordance with European Union regulations.

Unfortunately stevedores unions in Spain have announced a sequence of strikes during the odd hours of the following days:

  • March 6th/8th/10th/13th/15th/17th/20th/22nd/24th

Whilst MacAndrews will continue to operate services into and out of Spanish ports during this period, we expect disruption to all services and additional costs associated. MacAndrews reserves the right to implement a surcharge at short notice.

The situation remains fluid and your local MacAndrews contacts will continue to keep you appraised as situation evolves.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

16th February 2017 12:00 Update

MacAndrews have received an official update that the Spanish Government has opened up a three way discussion with the Unions and Anesco.

The planned strike action of next week has been suspended to enable negotiations to take place.

This ongoing action is having a detrimental effect on our schedule and has caused lost voyages which may have created disruption to your supply chains.

We hope the suspended strikes will mean a return to normal operations in Bilbao with productivity improvements and a return to schedule integrity.

MacAndrews will continue to keep you informed of developments and apologises for the ongoing disruptions due to Dockers action beyond our control.

07th February 2017 17:00 Update

MacAndrews have received an official update that scheduled strikes will take place at all Spanish ports during the following periods:

  • February 20th, 22nd and 24th

The official notice stipulates that the stevedores will be working one hour on and one hour off on the above dates. We do expect our vessels to be worked in Bilbao but operations will be slower than normal.

MacAndrews will be doing everything in order to minimise any disruption to customers.

07th February 2017 09:45

Please be advised MacAndrews is currently experiencing delays to our services in and out of Bilbao due to unofficial ongoing National Industrial action; the background to this low productivity is due to the ruling of the Spanish Port Law Reform.

MacAndrews is doing all we can to limit the disruption to our customers supply chain and will revert when we receive any further information.

In the meantime, if you have any further questions please contact your local MacAndrews office.
